I've been reading a metric shit ton of poetry this month. July was Camp NaNoWriMo, and this time around I elected to write a poem a day. So I've been reading and writing and writing and reading. Rachel Dilworth's The Wild Rose Asylum is absolutely heartbreaking. It's about the Magdalen laundries in Ireland. Dilworth received a Fulbright scholarship to travel to Ireland, where she conducted research for the book.

I also read Nicole Cooley's The Afflicted Girls, about the Salem Witch Trials. It, too, is heartbreaking.

Assholes Are Cheap Today

These bozos were in the back field, shooting a compound bow. The line of trees and shrubs are hiding another apartment complex. Which they are shooting toward. Assholes.

I don't know if they even live here, or if they just thought this looked like an awesome place for target practice. There were two people out in the field, playing with their dogs, while this was going on.

Another Good Day

My bad knee started misbehaving half-way to work this morning. It was unstable all day, and I wasn't sure what the hell I was going to do if it was still hurting when it was time to go home. It did pretty well, though! I had a few twinges walking home, when I put my weight on it wrong, but it held up.

A Most Excellent Tree

I pass this tree (and several like it, but none as fine as this one) when I walk to and from work. I think it's a beech. It's an old one and quite lovely.

Graffiti

There's a pedestrian underpass I use to cross the bypass, when I walk to work. It's fairly new. Last spring, there was no graffiti. Slowly the darn kids have painted the hell out of it, and I actually kind of like what they've done with the place.

I found this tiny mothwing while I was out walking this afternoon. The scalloped line along the outer edge is just gorgeous.

Thrift Store Haul

Somewhere between putting it in my cart and getting it home, a William Sleator book went missing. I'm bummed about that, but it was still a really good thrifting day.

I've been cheating on "my" library with the public library. The result is that I have a whole lot books I need to get through.

Sidewalk OPEN

I walk by this intersection every day, to and from work. I'm not sure what they're doing, but it involved opening up the sidewalk. The sections of concrete were lifted and set to the side, to allow access to the steam tunnel and the pipes below.
